Roberto, 13, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Little by little, he starts to lose the mobility of his muscles, but that didn’t stop him from enjoying himself to the fullest and walking along the seashore in his Beach Dream.
The strength is in the heart: ROBERTO
Hi, my name is Roberto and I am 14 years old. About a year ago I was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which is a disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration. I lost the opportunity to go to school because in my school I had to go up three floors to get to my classroom and I can not longer do it. I can only walk a little, but activities such as jumping, running or going up to stairs have disappeared from my life. My school didn't had a ramp and the only way to get up was that my classmates carry me on a wheelchair, but they can get hurt doing it. Also, the stress affects directly my heart and lungs, developing serious negative consequences. The type of education the school provides is not adapted to what I need, so my family decided it was time to drop out of that school and I was only able to complete the first year of Jr. High School.
I really like soccer, however, I don't play it anymore because I've been losing my strength. My favorite team has blue and white colors, they are “Rayados” from Monterrey.
Her mother’s words:
My mother Yara describes me as a loving, happy and noble kid. I have two little siblings younger than me, and they tell me that when it comes the day when I can no longer walk, they are the ones who are going to take me out on the wheelchair. Something that makes me happy is drawing and it keeps me up to know that although one day I won't be able to do many things, at least I will be able to continue drawing.
