The strength is in the heart: ROBERTO
Hi, my name is Roberto and I am 14 years old. About a year ago I was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which is a disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration. I had to stop going to school because to do so I needed to go up three flights of stairs to get to my classroom and I could no longer do it. I can only walk a little, but activities such as jumping, running or going up stairs have disappeared from my life. My school didn't have a ramp and the only way to go up was if my classmates carried me on a wheelchair, but they can get hurt doing it. Also, stress directly affects my heart and lungs, developing serious negative consequences. The type of education the school provides is not adapted to what I need, so my family decided it was time to drop out and I was only able to complete the first year of Jr. High School.
I really like soccer, however, I don't play it anymore because I've been losing my strength. My favorite team has blue and white colors, they are called “Rayados” from Monterrey.
His mother’s words:
My mother Yara describes me as a loving, happy and noble kid. I have two little siblings younger than me, and they tell me that when the day comes when I can no longer walk, they are going to be taking me out on the wheelchair. Something that makes me happy is drawing. It cheers me up to think that although one day I won't be able to do many things, I will at least be able to continue drawing.
